Only one month in and Virgin Money has already undergone a challenging summer. The company raised a two-fold concern within the investment community. It started when the Financial Stability Committee of the Bank of England decided in late June to bring “forward the assessment of stressed losses on consumer credit lending in the Bank’s 2017 annual stress”. In particular, its intention focuses more on the credit card business and the free balance transfer offers in the market. The latter has been the significant path for VM growth in the credit market segment, hence the doubts growing within investors. For its H1 2017 result presentation, VM has also announced a 140bp drop in its CET1 ratio compared to FY16. No matter how good you are in defending your business model, the market does not like such a big CET1 move, especially downwards. So, it is important for Tideway to put some context to these pieces of news.
